The end of an era.

7-3-24

We hear with sadness that the much loved campsite (El Cantal) on the beach in Mojacar, Spain is to close and the site will be redeveloped into yet more apartments and a Hotel.

This is really devastating as it’s the only site actually in Mojacar.

There are others but they are farther out.

We have in the past stayed at Queva Negro which is up a very steep hill on the road to Macinas and it’s a nice site, though it comes with some baggage. To access it you have to go down a very steep inline, cross a little Gulch and then drive up a steep drive. At the top there is a barrier and a small office where you register. But then access to the plots is very tricky as it requires a 90° turn between some buildings and large Motorhomes May find it too difficult?

It’s a lovely peaceful site with great views but if the on site restaurant is closed ( out of season) there is nowhere to walk to for a drink or a meal.

When we stayed we had a caravan so we could use the car to drive in to town or down to the beach. But in a Motorhome, it’s not so good.

There is I believe a bus that goes past the site now ( it links the new development at Macenas with Mojacar) but that has a time table, so you need to be organised.

There is also a site at the foot of the hill leading up to the back of Mojacar Pueblo, Camping El Quinto. This is a few miles out of Turre but it’s too far to walk. There is a regular bus service into Mojacar old town and down to the beach so this site becomes a better option for Motorhomes but it doesn’t have the ready access to the beach and all the night life that El Cantal had.

It’s a popular site though and it tends to attract long term stays.

Further out there is a site in Vera town that has lots of space and is served by all the facilities Vera town has to offer but, it’s a bit industrial and there is no beach.

There is a bus that runs into Mojacar via Vera Playa but it’s a long winded affair and may not be ideal.

I suspect Wild camping in Mojacar will increase, at least in the short term?

There has for years been a heated debate on The Face Book page of Mojacar Forum about Wild Camping by motorhomes along the beach and I suspect this will get worse. Some times there can be hundreds of motorhomes staying overnight on the beach parking areas. They even stay in the lay bye and on the surrounding road’s.

Locals are divided.

Some see the value of attracting motorhomer’s who spend money in local shops and bars whilst other moan and question where all the Waste water ( and worse) is being dumped?

There is also an issue about dogs.

It seems almost compulsory to own at least one dog if you have a motor home and local people have complained about the dog mess and that the dogs are allowed on the beach when it’s actually illegal. ( The beach is only open to dogs during certain periods).

There have also been stories about dogs attacking other dog walkers but I take these with a pinch of salt.

So we at least will be sorry to see the site close.

We have some wonderful memories of our stays at El Cantal and we made some good friends there.

Perhaps in the future Jaki and I will be able to afford to stay in the new Hotel or rent one of the new apartments, but it will never replace the sheer freedom of waking up in a camper and walking out the gate onto the beach in the morning Sunshine.

Oh how things change.

For full info on our stay at this site (and many more) have a look back at our old blogs. There is lots of information available. And a few laughs.
